Book Review by Attorney Roberts:
Joanne Koenig Coste speaks frequently to the public, and her talks open a door of understanding for those of us who work and contend with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

This book explains how you can learn to communicate on an emotional level with an Alzheimer’s patient, even though he or she is not able to comprehend what you’re saying on a cognitive level.

“The person with Alzheimer’s disease – like anyone with memory loss – may soon forget what you say, but he will never forget how you made him feel.”

Learning to Speak Alzheimer’s has many practical ideas and approaches to bridge the communication gaps. The book takes you across those bridges, on a guided tour of the world of a person who is progressively losing the ability to process the sights, sounds, smells and feelings of everyday life.

Anyone who has heard her speak, can tell you how Joanne's sense of humor lifts the spirits of everyone in the room. I found that same gentle sense of humor throughout her book. The author tells us many ways to deal with mental disability with greater care and compassion. “It isn’t Alzheimer’s that takes away the person’s dignity," she explains, "it’s other people’s reactions that do.”
